Egypt demands Nile river rights

Egypt have reasserted its share of Nile river water and have also warned basin countries agianst signing the water-sharing agreement.The countries were cautioned, after the failure in agreement of relocating shares.

Due to the opposition by Sudan and Egypt, The Nile Basin project was put on hold.The agreement of water sharing among different nations was halted untill then.

Minister of Irrigation, Mohammed Allam said “Egypt reserves the right to take whatever course it sees suitable to safeguard its share. If the Nile basin countries unilaterally signed the agreement, it would be considered a death announcement of the Nile Basin Initiative.”

Egypt’s share of the Nile’s water is a historic right that Egypt has defended throughout its history.” he said while addressing the Parliament.

River Nile , which is considered as one of the longest rivers in the world , stretches all the way from Kagera river in Burundi to the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt.It constitutes the two Niles, Blue and White.It stretches over 6,741km.

The Nile river presently serves around ten countries which include Egypt, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Congo, Uganda, Eritrea, Uganda, Republic of Congo, Burundi,and Kenya.These nations however, look forward for an equitable sharing of Nile water.
