The United nation has agreed the non-binding pact by the United States, China, India and South Africa and brought an end to the 193 nation climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark to an end on Saturday. Many of the UN member countries are not much satisfied by the climate accord, and are telling that they will only agree to take note of it. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the secretary general of UN said “Finally we sealed a deal, The ‘Copenhagen Accord’ may not be everything everyone had hoped for, but this decision is an important beginning.”
Some of the developing countries criticized the pact, saying its not sufficient to stop the climate changes that are responsible for floods and famine and kill million of people. The UN has taken accord in such a way that those countries which are opposing were convinced not to object.
The president of United States, Barrack Obama had taken an agreement with five nations previously and described it as success and basis for future talks. “Today we have made a meaningful and unprecedented breakthrough here in Copenhagen,” he said on Friday evening.”For the first time in history, all major economies have come together to accept their responsibility to take action to confront the threat of climate change. This progress did not come easily and we know this progress alone is not enough, We’ve come a long way but we have much further to go.”
But Sudan’s representative and chairperson for a group of 77 developing countries, Mr.Lumumba Stanislas Dia-ping,has said that this will incinerate the African continent and can cause Holocaust. The agreement “is a solution based on values, the very same values in our opinion that funnel- led six million people in Europe into furnaces,” he said.In this accord they made a deal to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius and to introduce new objectives, said Obama.
The countries which participated have to give list of their action to control emission and commitment to avoid further reduction and they also agreed to give developing nations $100 billion to help them from 2010 in dealing with climate change. It also agreed to help the developing countries to cope with climate change.
But the major draw back was it falls short of committing ant nation to pollution reductions or at least control it. A majority of the countries were unhappy, that they were excluded from negotiations and have criticized the accord as there was no binding and limits on time or target for solving the green house gas emission.
Claudia Salerno, Venezuela’s representative told “Those of us who wish to speak have to make a point of order by cutting our hands and drawing blood,” Tuvalu’s Ian Fry, whose country is one of the most at risk from global warming, said the deal amounted to a betrayal.”It looks like we are being offered 30 pieces of silver to betray our people and our future,”Our future is not for sale. I regret to inform you that Tuvalu cannot accept this document.”
Some of the European nations have agreed with the deal but the European Commission president Mr.Jose Manuel Barroso was very disappointed and said it was clearly below the goal of European union. Thing which is important about this deal is not in it. There are no verifiable emission cuts targets, no number or dates, and crucially no deadline for when world leaders must come back together and put the terms of this deal into a legally-binding treaty. This will not prevent the earth from catastrophe.
