"The right decision for Afghanistan and for Nato", says Rasmussen

After the US president promised to send 30,000 new troops, the head of Nato said that members of the alliance are willing to send 5000 soldiers more.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced from Brussels, that the Nato members “will send at least 5,000 soldiers to this operation, and possibly a few more thousand on top of it”.

The decision made by US President Barack Obama was welcomed by Rasmussen and he said “I think it’s the right decision for Afghanistan and for Nato.”

To follow the US pattern Rasmussen urged more than 40 nations and the partners of Nato,

“This is not just America’s war,” he said. “We must all do more.”

The Nato sources of James Bay, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in the afghan capital said that the alliance could send more than 7000 troops.

“The reason the figures are still fluent is that some countries are still requiring a bit more arm twisting.

“Nato foreign ministers are meeting over the next few days but some key countries, for example Germany, won’t make a final decision until after a conference on Afghanistan in January.”

If conditions favor the next year , Rusmussen would advise the Nato-led international security Assistance Force (Isaf) to take the responsibility of security to Afghan forces.

He said, “We are not speaking about an exit strategy, but a transition strategy”.
