About 12 detainees from Guantanamo Bay detention in Cuba were being transferred by United States to their respective countries. There were Six Yemenis, four afghans and two Somalian prisoners who were transferred. These transfers were carried out between the individual countries and the United States to ensure that  proper security measures were carried out.

“Consultations with foreign authorities regarding these individuals will continue.” said the US authorities. Presently 198 detainees are present in the Guantanamo bay facility in Cuba after the transfer. Some will face trials in United States while the rest are being transfer to their countries.

The prisoners from Yemen are facing problem when getting transferred as US suspects that AL-Qaeda which is still active there may cause trouble.More over the country lacks proper security measures and may not ensure proper security for the Guantanamo returnees and they might join armed groups.

There has been meeting between Yemeni officials and US officials in the Yemeni capital Sana since few months regarding this issue. The Yemeni detainees are not released immediately in Yemen after their arrival from Guantanamo bay, said the Yemeni officials.

Yemen “never had a case where a prisoner was transferred and released immediately, You have to go through a judiciary process, then a law enforcement process and then after that, that decides what happens.”

Since 2002 more than 560 detainees have being send to their countries from Guantanamo detention facility. Barack Obama who initially said that the Guantanamo facility will close in January, now says that it might take some time to shut down the facility.

A number of detainees will be send to maximum security prison in northern Illinois from Guantanamo said the United States officials. Robert Gates, the defense secretary, has said the administration is planning to release 119 detainees to their countries as soon as possible.
