Indonesians protested in Jakarta

To mark international anti-corruption day on Wednesday, more than a dozen of rallies were planned for many cities as well as for the capital of Jakarta. To end widespread corruption among politicians, other public officials and police, thousands of Indonesians gathered and demanded the government to immediately take the action.

The protest organizer, Usman Hamid Said, “Today’s aim is not to attack politically any party, we just want to send a message to our fellow countrymen … that justice cannot be served while corruption is still rampant in our country.”

Before the rallies went advanced hundreds of anti-riot police were deployed outside the palace of the president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

On Monday it was believed by Yudhoyono that the protest was partly intended at destabilizing his government, he even said this to Jakarta. “My logic says these political movements want to discredit, shake and topple me in the short term.” He said. Questions were put on Yudhoyono over the previous year’s 6.75 trillion rupiah ($715m) government bailout of a bank which was brimful of irregularities, alleged by critics. A claim was denied by Yudhodono, that the bailout benefited his re-election campaign on which the inquiry was launched last week by the Indonesian politicians.

Investigators concluded that, from the Corruption Eradication Commission on made-up charges of blackmail and bribery the senior police tried to frame anti-graft officials, the government’s commitment to end corruption was also hurt.

On the Promises of stamping out corruption in July, Yudhodono was re-elected.
