Ultra orthodox Jews protest against Intel's working hours
A protest was seen in Israel at Intel corporation’s new electronic chip plant. The demonstration was done by radical orthodox Jews as the company was working on the Jewish sabbath near the religious sites.
The protesters claimed that the corporation was desecrating the sabbath, which is starts from Friday night and ends on Saturday night.
The protesters were dispersed by the police and the companies spokesman’s statement was reported saying that they were working within the law and that they would continue to do the work. A west Jerusalem plant was installed by the Intel World’s largest chip manufacturer.
The spokesperson from Intel Koby Bahar said that the talks had been held with the radical Jewish leaders over the new plant and will also continue for the production of wafer in the next stage.
Koby said “Intel has been operating in Jerusalem for 24 years and therefore this plant does not represent a change to the status quo, this plant will operate in accordance with our business needs and the law, including on Saturdays”.
Protesters in the past have also went into street violence and sometimes in long negotiations while on the other hand the authorities struggle to meet the demands of the extremists and the secular Israeli laws.
Intel has its four development and research centers in Israel, which is one of the largest exporter if Israel with nearly 1.4 billion dollars in 2008. Intel’s chip plant worth of 3.5 billion dollars was opened last year in southern Israeli region called Kiryath Gat.
The new Jerusalem Plant is said to employ around 150 people.
