The United Nations Population Fund has said to reduce pressure on resources and the environment, women should be empowered and should be given more control over their reproductive health so that they might choose to have less children.
It said “Slower population growth would help build social resilience to climate change’s impacts and would contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions”.
The World population Report of 2009 has called in to include measures to empower women and improve access to family planning services during the climate change UN summit in Copenhagen in coming December.
The 94 page report said “There is still time for the negotiators about to gather in Copenhagen to think creatively about population, reproductive health and gender equality and how these might contribute to a just and environmentally sustainable world”.
This report is the latest in the study to suggest that the contraceptive measures could slow the population and therefore help to tackle the climate change.
But according to UNICEF many Africans believe that the large families are a form of insurance on the land since every 1 in the 6 children dies before the age of five.
The question now raised is should we in the developing Nations have fewer children to save the environment ?
