Disturbance was seen in the Indian Parliament when the opposition members tried to brush off the findings of an inquiry into the controversial destruction of the Babri Masjid by Hindu mobs that sparked the bloody religious riots in 1990s.

The findings of the inquiry were presented in the parliament and the Liberhan report was approved in an emergency meeting on Tuesday. The report apparently was leaked to the national newspaper which triggered a protest from the opposition.

The leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the opposition were indicted in the story published in the Indian Express newspaper. This triggered angry protests by the party members in parliament and caused the house to adjourn.

The interior minister, P Chidambaram put forward the 900 page report in both Lok Sabha and Rajyasabha houses in midst of unruly scenes.

The report which was authored by Justice Man mohan singh Liberhan blamed 68 people most of them leaders and bureaucrats of BJP for the demolition of the Babri mosque.

The party’s present leader LK Advani and former BJP prime minister AB Vajpayee were among the people named in the report.

The destruction of Babri masjid in 1992 in the northern Uttar Pradesh state triggered one of the worst Hindu-Muslim violence since the partition of India and Pakistan. Around 2,000 people mostly Muslims, were killed in those riots.

One of the Indian news channel NDTV reportedly said “(They) could have at least attempted to stem the tide of communalism and the rape of democracy. But they chose to remain deaf, dumb and blind throughout, the demolition was carried out with great painstaking preparation and preplanning”.

LK advani accused Congress party for deliberately leaking the inquiry’s conclusions to the press after the report became public. He protested against such action and pleaded his innocence.

He said to the Parliament that “I take strong objection as to how the government has suddenly leaked the report”, and to plead his innocence described the demolition of the mosque as “the saddest moment of my life”.

Chidambaram denied leaking of the report to the press or any news agencies.

Rani Singh an Asian analyst from London said that the report was very sensitive as it was from religious background. She said “Communal tension is simmering below the surface in India”.

“Although with a Hindu majority population, there are Muslims, Jews, Christians and Sikhs and other religions all living perfectly happily side-by-side”.

“But the Ayodhya massacre in 1992 is a terrible scar on India’s history that hasn’t really healed”.

She also said that BJP after orchestrating the destruction had tried to distance itself from the demolition of mosque and killings in the riots.

She continued saying “The BJP has wanted to kind of neutralize its tone a bit and wants to get away from any the whole idea that it planned .. or was behind, shall we say .. the massacre and the destruction of the mosque in 1992″.

“Having said that, LK Advani does say that his long-cherished dream is to have a Hindu temple erected on that site.”

LK advani was also criticized for traveling across India and drawing support for his campaign to build in a temple at the site of Babri masjid after destroying it.

Fanatic and radical Hindus believed that Babri mosque was built on the ruins of a temple marking the birthplace of the Hindu Lord Ram, which lead to destruction and the riots.

Editor of BJP’s official newspaper, Tarun Vijay tried to shift the blame on the ruling party saying that the report was used by Congress to divide the Hindus and the Muslims in the country.

He even tried to shift the blame by showing the current situation and said “I think the report very unfortunately comes at a time when the country was going to remember and resolve to fight against terrorism in the wake of the 26/11 attack on Mumbai”.

“Perhaps the Congress is again planning to invoke a situation that creates a schism and a conflicting situation between the Hindus and Muslims that has always been a hallmark of the Congress politics.

“It wants Hindus and Muslims again divided on a very, very extreme position so that it can reap the full consequences of it … to keep Congress in power in the next election.”

BJP has already been afflicted by internal fighting after chain of defeats in the elections this year.

A leader of the Babri Masjid Action Committee, Zaffaryab Jilani who has been calling for the mosque to be rebuilt has welcomed the report.

He said “We have been saying that it was a conspiracy, a well-planned strategy and not a spontaneous action, which led to the demolition of the mosque. This report appears to have come to that conclusion”.
