The military officials have reported that heavy firing took place at the largest US army base in which at least 12 people were killed and around 30 people injured.

The base commander at Fort Hood in Texas, Lieutenant-General Bob Cone said that one of the suspected attackers has been killed and 2 of them arrested on Thursday. Mr. cone said “The shooter was killed. He was a soldier. We since then have apprehended two additional soldiers that are suspects. There were eyewitness accounts that there may have been more than one shooter”.

Cone said that the shooting took place at a “Soldier Readiness Facility” at 1:30 pm, where the soldiers get ready and get medical checkup for their deployment in other countries.

It was not confirmed but certain broadcasters in US alleged that the shooter was Major Malik Hasan. Sources said that he was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to Fort Hood in July. Hasan, 39, was killed after opening fire at the base.

After the attack the base was locked down after the attack. A graduation ceremony was going to take place on the day of attack at the facility.

chief of media at Fort Hood, Christopher Hogue said “The only one we know who was shooting was killed and he had two handguns”.

The US president, Barack Obama expressed concern over the attack and called it “horrific outburst of violence”. It was reported in Washington that he said “It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil”.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent, Patty Culhane said that in spite of taking several rigorous security protocols the attack was undeniable. She said “At every US military base since September 11, they do something that is called ’100 per cent ID check’ – that means that when you pull up to the gate, there are armed soldiers and also contractors there, and you have to have a special sticker in your car, You also have to have a military ID. If you do not have that, you have to pull over to the side, and your care is usually swept for explosives, and you need an escort”.

“Family members [of service personnel] do haver ID, so they are allowed to go on to the base” she said.

A Texas senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said Fort Hood has around 50,000 troops and at least 35,000 were present at the base at the time of attack. she said “Our dedicated military personnel have sacrificed so much in service to our country, and it sickens me that the men and women of Fort Hood have been subjected to this senseless, random violence”.
