Several Palestinian homes were leveled to the ground by the Israeli authorities even though the UN and international countries have called to stop the demolition process in the city.

A Jerusalem municipality spokesman, Gidi Schmerling said that the areas affected by the Israeli demolition were Shuafat, Zur Baher, Silwan and Jabel Mukabar neighborhoods. The Israeli’s said that these houses were built illegally. He said “All the houses were demolished in accordance with a court order”.

On the other hand the suffering Palestinians say that the municipality is biased and they discriminate against them and they say it is impossible to get legal permits or extensions for the existing homes. Due to this thousands of houses have been built without the permit given by Israel and then Israel destroys hundreds of them each year.

The mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat has vowed to crack down on the illegal constructions in the city and says that the east of Jerusalem will not be spared which has a very narrow scope and deals with lots of issues regarding Israel-Palestinian conflict.

But UN on Tuesday called in for an immediate halt for such provocative activity. UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said “Such actions run counter to international law and have a serious and long-term negative impact on Palestinian families and communities, the UN reiterates its call for an immediate and unconditional halt to such actions and urges the state of Israel to protect the civilian population in OPT [occupied Palestinian Territories] from further displacement and dispossession”.

According to OCHA, since this year started at least 600 Palestinians have been evicted and their homes have been demolished and thousands of them are planned to be demolished. UN which wants to hold peace talks in this dispute said that this provocative step is indeed “unhelpful”.

This situation gets worse as the days pass by and calls in the protests from the agitated Palestinian. Palestinians also demand that the municipality should face a trial in the court for doing such crime.

Ir Amim a rights group from Israel said that “an irresponsible step that could escalate the situation in the city and bring it to a new boiling point”. Though the acts of Israel is condemned throughout the world it continues to do what ever it has planned in its demolition policy.

Palestinian-appointed governor of Jerusalem, Adnan al-Husseini said “International bodies and the United Nations Security Council should intervene to stop Israeli authorities from carrying out these criminal actions”.

Israeli Municipality has around 1,500 more demolition orders since May says a report developed by UN. The report showed that if at all the orders were followed then around 9,000 Palestinians would be homeless.

There are around 2,00,000 jews living along side 2,50,000 Palestinians in the East Jerusalem.
