The Supreme Court today asked Tamil Nadu Government to give a reply by Thursday for under what instance the police had entered the Madras High Court premises on February 19, the day of the lawyer-police clash. Mentioning the incident as “serious” and “sad”, Supreme Court said it will pass a formal order relating to holding of judicial inquiry on Thursday.
Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said that the incident was serious in which the judges and lawyers became victims of the clash and there was a lot of destruction of property. Court ruled out setting up of a judicial inquiry under a sitting judge, but said the committee to inquire about the incident will be reconstituted after consulting both members of the bar and the Tamil Nadu Government.
Court asked “Why police station inside Court?”. “We will not allow any police station inside the court premises,” the bench added.
Court said that for those lawyers who were injured in the clash, the state will bear the expenses for their treatment. Court also requested state government to offer financial aid to the lawyers whose vehicles were damaged by the police. Court requested Lawyers to end their strike and resume the work and told that necessary action will be taken against those found responsible for the clash.
