Obama cartoon protest

Obama cartoon protest

A cartoon published in New York Post by  Sean Delonas depicting a chimpanzee as the drafter of American Financial Stimulus bill has sparked protest in the US. Democratic party leaders came against the news paper accusing that the Cartoon is an offensive reference to President Barack Obama.

On the reverse side of the Cartoon, the paper published a photograph of Obama signing the stimulus bill into law. This added fuel to the fire.

The cartoon shows a police officer telling his colleague who had just shot a chimpanzee that “they’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Saying that several people were felt irritated by this Cartoon, Democratic leaders demanded explanation from the paper. The leaders, including New York Governor David A Peterson, apparently believe that the cartoon evokes memories of racist past by comparing the first African-American President Obama with the chimpanzee.

Editor-in-Chief of New York Post Col , Allan said: “The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy” by standing behind the Cartoon. It was reported that the callers protesting against the Cartoon has jammed the lines of the News paper.

Some activist groups are planning to protest outside The Post’s offices. Leroy G Comrie Jr, City Councilman and a Queens Democrat called for a boycott of the news paper for publishing such a violent and racist cartoon and thus insulting all Newyorkers.
