mutiny_spreadsEven when the mutinous soldiers in Dhaka surrendered and ended the fight after accepting an offer of amnesty from the Government, police and witnesses say that Mutinies by members of BDR has broken out at different places across Bangladesh. The shooting began on Wednesday, between the members of BDR , over pay dispute and other issues, has claimed 50 deaths so far.

A local police official said that, there were shooting incidents at least in more than a dozen towns, between the members of BDR troops on Thursday and there are no reports of causalities so far. “Fighting is raging outside the BDR camp, with troops coming on the street holding up guns and shooting,” said a Reuters witness in Sylhet, in the northeast of the country.

Mohammad Quamrul Islam, state minister for law and parliamentary affairs, told reporters early on Thursday that all weapons by rebellious army men inside BDR headquarters will be surrendered in the coming hours. But the official said this process has been slow.

A police officer, who doesn’t want his name to be revealed, said. “The situation inside (the BDR complex) is calm but tense. The surrender of all the weapons by the rebels may take hours more,”

Even though the current mutiny is not politically motivated, analysts say that this unrest within the forces would affect Bangladesh’s political stability and the ability to attract investments. Bangladesh had witnessed several military coups after its independence in 1971.

The problem also projects the challenges facing the new Bangladesh Government. Sheik Hasina became the Prime minister in last December, ending the two year long army-backed emergency rule and this incident is surely a blow to her efforts to stabilize the country.
